The International Bridge climbs out of the east end and hangs its lights over the St. Marys, and on a January morning the whole span reads like a sentence written in cold. Algoma Seasons works underneath that view, plowing drives and side lots around Sault Ste. Marie before the first commuters roll toward the bridge plaza. When the river finally breaks up and the lawns come out from under the snow flattened and pale, the mowers come off the trailer and those same properties get their edges back. There is a real satisfaction in a strip of curb line cut straight enough to sight down. Winter and summer, it is the same yards, the same streets, kept in order.
