The White Pine Trail runs straight through Sand Lake, an old rail bed gone over to bicycles and pine shade, and the village keeps its small, sandy, easygoing shape around it. Ensley Farms & Landscape works the lawns here, mowing, trimming, edging and running cleanups on ground that drains fast and greens up eager. Summer evenings are long this far north of Grand Rapids, and a freshly cut yard under that low gold light is a fine thing to drive past. When the cold sets in, the same work turns to plowing drives, shoveling steps and salting walks before the day starts. Two halves of one year, both of them spent outside.
