Saline sits where the old Chicago Road crosses the Saline River, brick storefronts on one side and the mill pond on the other, and the town's yards carry that same settled look. Bridgewater Sales & Service mows them right through the long Washtenaw summer — village lots with tight corners, and the bigger places out toward Bridgewater where the fields pick up again. Trimming follows the fence line, the lamp posts and the hand-laid stone edging somebody set a very long time ago. Fall drops the leaves in one heavy week, and they come off the grass before they can pack down and smother it. A cut lawn along a brick street is a small thing, and it is also the first thing anyone sees.
