Drive south out of St. Clair toward China Township in October and the town thins into fields — corn stubble, a windbreak of pines, the river showing itself again at every bend of the road. J and J Lawn and Landscape works both ends of that stretch, the tight village lots and the long country driveways, mowing and trimming and edging all season, then hauling off leaves once the maples turn. When the wind swings northeast and Lake Huron starts throwing snow down the corridor, those same trucks push the driveways open and salt the walks before daylight. Country drives are long, town walks are narrow, and both need to be clear by the time anybody needs them. There's a plain kind of pride in that.
