January in Saginaw Charter Township has a particular flatness to it, the fields west of Center Road going white to the horizon and the Tittabawassee running dark between iced banks. Lee Service Company is out in that landscape with plows, opening residential drives and commercial lots so the township can go about its Monday. In the warm months the same trucks trade blades for mowers, cutting on a regular schedule, trimming close along walks and drives, keeping beds and borders in order. Flat ground shows every wobble, which is exactly why the straight lines and the clean edges matter here. From Shields toward Freeland and the neighborhoods off Gratiot, it is steady work in both directions of the calendar.
