The big oaks over Royal Oak's side streets drop acorns onto the sidewalks in September and stand bare by Thanksgiving, and the town reads as two different places on either side of that line. Oakridge Lawn and Snow works both of them: mowing, trimming, edging and leaf clearing while there is anything left to cut, then plowing, shoveling and salting once there is not. Deep shade makes thin grass and heavy leaf loads, a particular sort of lawn to carry through a summer. Come winter that same shade keeps a driveway frozen long after the open blocks have gone dry.
