At four in the morning in February, Goddard Road is one long white ribbon and nothing moves on it but the plows. Freeman's Lawn & Landscaping is out in that hour, pushing driveways open and salting walkways so people can back out at six without thinking twice about it. The land here is low and holds its water, so spring arrives wet and the mowers wait for the ground along the Lower Rouge to firm up. Then the season turns and the same trucks are hauling mulch, shaping beds, cutting grass on a weekly loop through the neighborhoods off Wayne Road. Summer smells like cut lawn on a warm evening; winter is headlights and an apron of concrete scraped down to bare gray. Two halves of one Romulus year, and both of them worth doing right.
