On a clear February night the moraine ground around Spencer Park goes blue-white under the moon, the pond locked up and the sledding slope printed with the day's runs. Mt Vernon Landscape is out in that cold doing the winter work of Rochester Hills: plowing drives and lots, clearing walks down to the pavement, and spreading salt where the sun never quite reaches. Snow in this part of Michigan comes often and modestly rather than all at once, so the season is won by showing up repeatedly. There is a real quiet pleasure in a cleared drive under a hard winter sky. That is the job, done again the next night.
