There is a September weekend when Main Street fills up for Good Old Days and the whole place remembers, out loud, that it is a town. Lacey Lawn Care spends the weeks on either side of it doing the unglamorous part — mowing, trimming, edging, and hauling leaves once the maples finally let go. Then the light shortens, the first serious storm arrives, and the same work becomes plowing drives, clearing walks and putting salt on the ice. Both jobs deliver the same small mercy: someone comes home and does not have to think about their property. Richmond, Michigan, in both of its seasons.
