The old rail grade that became the White Pine Trail runs straight north through Reynolds Township, and in January the wind uses it like a hallway. Snow off Lake Michigan reaches Montcalm County early and often, falling for days at a stretch in fine dry flakes that drift wherever there is open field. Out here a drive can run a couple hundred feet from the road, and getting it opened before dawn is the difference between an ordinary day and a stuck one.
