Winter comes to Reading quietly and then all at once — a gray afternoon on M-49 turning into six inches by the time the village lights blink on. Moore's Landscaping works both halves of the year: plowing and shoveling drives and walks when the county roads go white, then mowing, trimming and cleaning up beds once the ground softens and the lawns come back. There is satisfaction in a driveway opened before the first car needs it, the banks pushed back square, the salt down where ice likes to form. There is a matching satisfaction in June, when that same drive is bordered by a stripe of grass cut level and edged clean. Two seasons, one set of hands, the same stretch of Hillsdale County.
