Ray Center is a crossroads, a handful of buildings where 30 Mile meets Romeo Plank, and the year turns around it twice. From April on, MTE SERVICES is mowing the township — cuts on a weekly turn, the trimmer run around every post and step, walks and drives edged, the concrete tidied before the truck moves on — and by late fall the leaves are cleared and the mowers are put away. Then the other half of the year arrives and the same roads get run in the dark: driveways plowed, walks and entries opened, salt down where ice sets up at the end of a drive. Two kinds of work, one place, and the measure of both is that somebody can pull in without thinking about it. Ray Township looks after itself, and this is part of how.
