By late June the hay is off the fields around Ray and the whole township smells like it for a week. Grassmasters is out in that, running long lots where a pass can go two hundred feet before it turns, trimming around the light poles and the propane tank and the old maple nobody is going to cut down, edging the walk so grass and concrete keep to their own sides. Set the deck high in August and a lawn out here holds its color through the dry stretch — that is the difference a set schedule makes. Clippings get blown off the drive rather than left to bake on the concrete. Every yard has its own shape, and the job is to leave each one looking like somebody thought about it.
