Ray Township is laid out on the mile roads, a square mile at a time, and in April you can watch the green come back one field and one front yard at a time across the whole grid. First Call Services, LLC starts its season there — the first cut of the year, ragged winter grass brought down to an even height, beds and fence lines trimmed out, the drive edged back to its true line. From then on it runs weekly through a Macomb County summer: mow, trim, edge, clear the walks, move on. The pleasure is in the second and third week, when a lawn stops looking cut and starts looking kept. Come November the leaves come off and get hauled, and the grid goes brown and open again.
