Rapid River sits where the water comes down out of the Hiawatha and spreads into the head of Little Bay de Noc, and the town is mostly a junction, a river mouth and a great deal of standing timber. Harris Landcare mows the clearings people have made in all of that — village lots, camp yards, long approaches cut back from the road. Up here the green comes late and leaves early, so from the first cut of the season the work stays close and regular: even passes, trimming to the foundation and the woodshed, edging the gravel line, the deck and drive left clean. There is real satisfaction in a tidy square of lawn with jack pine standing right behind it. Fall cleanup comes early too, and when it is done the yard is ready for whatever the bay sends across it.
