Potterville is a short main street with Eaton County cornfields at both ends and the traffic on I-69 humming past like weather. Burgess Lawn & Snow cuts the town's grass through the long green stretch of the year, mowing, trimming and edging the yards along the village blocks and the bigger lots out where the sidewalks give up. June evenings here smell like cut grass and warm asphalt, and a lawn finished at that hour — stripes laid even, walks blown clean, the maple ringed neatly instead of scalped — is about as good as a small town looks. Flat ground is unforgiving about a crooked line, so the passes get run straight and the edges get kept sharp. Leaves come down in October and go out before they can mat the turf.
