Portland grew up where the Looking Glass River folds into the Grand, and the town still organizes itself around those two currents, its bridges, its riverwalk and the maples that gave it a nickname. M. Reay and Son Snow Plowing takes the season the rivers announce, going out while the streetlights are still the only light on Kent Street and cutting drives open before anybody has to think about it. A river town holds its damp, and the snow that lands here packs heavy, so the blade goes down early and comes back for the second push rather than leaving a windrow across somebody's morning. The measure of a good night is a driveway scraped to the concrete and the mailbox still standing. Fathers and sons have plowed these streets in the dark for as long as the streets have been here, and there is quiet pride in being the reason a town wakes up already moving.
