Lake Michigan is forty-some miles west of Portage, which in January is close enough — the bands come inland overnight and leave more than the evening forecast admitted. Eco Outdoors keeps the hours that answer for it: three in the morning on Shaver Road, headlights and a plow blade and a town that has not woken up yet. The measure of the night is not how much snow moved but how many people step out at seven and find nothing standing between them and the car. Drives opened, walks cut down to concrete, salt on the spots that always glaze first. When the storm quits at noon instead of midnight, the trucks go back out and do it again, because half-cleared is not cleared.
