Mr. Stumpgrinder

About Mr. Stumpgrinder

Out in Pleasant Plains the country is sand and jack pine with the Pere Marquette running dark between its snowbanks, and winter here is long and serious about being winter. Mr. Stumpgrinder plows the drives and two-tracks that thread through that timber — pushed back to their real edges, a turnaround opened at the house, walks cleared and the steps salted. Under the pines the snow keeps coming off the branches in loads long after the sky has gone blue, which means the job is not over when the storm is. The good feeling is pulling into a place that was buried and leaving it looking like a road again. Plowing covers Pleasant Plains, Baldwin, Idlewild, and Chase.
