One Man and a Lift

About One Man and a Lift

By deep January the lake is a white plate ringed in bare oak, and the wind that crosses it reaches the county roads with nothing left to slow it down. One Man and a Lift takes on the snow here — plowing drives and lots, clearing walkways down to the step, and salting where ice glazes over after a bright afternoon. Long rural driveways are the local puzzle: a quarter mile of gravel that drifts in at the same two spots every single storm. Knowing those spots is most of the trick, and pushing the banks well back early is the rest. Open by morning, every time — that is what the work is for.
