The snow that matters here comes from the west, off Lake Michigan, and it usually arrives sometime after midnight. Jim's Snowplowing is out in it — headlights swinging across a lot, the wing throwing a curl of white toward the bank, US-131 humming somewhere past the treeline. Plowing drives and lots, breaking open the ends the county truck has sealed shut, opening the path from a door to a car. Lake-effect doesn't fall so much as it keeps falling, and the only honest answer to that is going back around. By the time Plainwell's kitchen lights come on, the work is done and nobody had to think about it.
