Pinconning calls itself the cheese capital of Michigan, a small town on the western shore of Saginaw Bay where winter rides in on a raw, damp wind off the water. Walt's Trucking turns its trucks to snow removal when the season comes, plowing driveways so people can get where they're going. Out on the bay, ice shanties gather in loose little villages, and back on shore the plowing starts before the first anglers head out onto the ice. Each drive is opened wide, the banks shoved back far enough that they won't creep in by noon. In a town this flat and set right on the water, a cleared path is how winter gets handled one morning at a time.
