The streets that climb away from downtown are no joke in February — one glazed hill will hold a car at the bottom of it until somebody deals with the ice. Jump Services deals with it, running Petoskey drives and lots in the small hours: plowing, clearing walks and steps, salting the pitches that would otherwise turn to glass by morning. Snow arrives fast and often up here, so the job is less one heroic dig than a hundred timely ones. The measure of a good night is how boring it turns out — everybody gets out on time and nobody gives the driveway a thought. That is the ambition, straight through to April.
