Perry's roads run in a plain mile grid, straight out past the corn stubble until the sky takes over the rest. Davis & Company works that grid in both directions — plow blades down before first light finds M-52, mower decks turning once the ditch grass greens in May. There is a particular satisfaction in a driveway opened clean to the gravel while the rest of the township is still dark. Snow removal here is largely a matter of knowing which stretches drift first when the wind comes across open field, and getting to them in the right order. Lawn care is the other half of the year: an even cut, a straight edge, and a yard that reads as cared for all the way from the road.
