The Kalamazoo River runs cold and steaming past Parchment on a January morning, and the mist that lifts off it freezes to everything it touches. Fairway Irrigation and snow removal plows the short blocks and the drives that climb up from the river flat, clearing lots, cutting back the bank the county plow leaves at the end of every driveway, shoveling walks and putting salt where the shade keeps ice all day. The work happens in the small hours, while Parchment sleeps and the streetlights hum over empty white yards. By breakfast the drives are down to pavement and the walks are swept. There is a quiet pride in that: a whole street able to leave on time.
