Saturday morning on Owosso's older streets, and the mowers start up one at a time down the block until the whole neighborhood is humming. YoungWorkZ is in that sound — trailer at the curb, one crew on the open ground and another working in tight around porch steps, hydrangeas and the chain-link along the alley. Every yard ends the same way: the edge opened along the sidewalk, the trimmer run around the posts, the drive blown off so the concrete is as clean as the grass. Summer here gives long evenings, and the last lawn of the day gets cut in that low slanted light where fresh mower lines look about as good as grass can look. Come autumn there are leaves to move, and come spring there's winter's litter to clear before anything green is allowed to show.
