Out where Owosso's last streetlight gives up and the road goes straight as a survey line, the yards run right into corn and sugar beet ground, and the wind crosses all of it without anything to slow it down. S & K Farm & Yard mows on both sides of that line — the wide half-acre lots at the township edge and the tidy ones closer in — cutting rows that keep their shape until the next visit comes due. There is trimming along fence lines and mailbox posts, edging where the drive meets green, and a walk blown off so nothing rides indoors on a boot. In April the crew opens a yard back up after the frost lets go; in November they take the leaves down until the grass is bare and even again. Evening turns these flats gold, and a finished lawn holds that light every bit as well as a field does.
