Cold settles hard between the lakes here — Orchard Lake on one side, Cass and Upper Straits close by — and one January night can leave every wooded drive in the Village banked blue-white by morning. Ice is the quieter problem on shaded lakeside pavement, so salt goes where the sun will not arrive until noon. Oakland County storms like to come through overnight, which makes the pre-dawn round the one that counts. There is something worth doing in that hour: a drive opened to blacktop while the house is still dark.
