Orange Township rolls more than people expect — low ridges, hayfields, a hollow with a creek down in it — and the wind sorts the snow accordingly, scouring the high ground and packing the low. Plowing here is a matter of knowing which drives fill first and reaching them before a drift has time to set hard. We open drives and turnarounds down to the gravel, clear the walks and steps by hand, and salt the slopes and the shaded corners that never dry out. The pile at the end of a drive gets pushed back and kept back, so February has somewhere left to go. An open way out toward Palo or Fenwick before the sun is up is what we are after, and it is good work to be doing.
