River fog and darkness come together on the low ground south of Onondaga, and a January morning here can freeze over twice before anybody is awake to see it. We start early on days like that, opening drives and parking areas and getting to the shaded stretches the sun never reaches all winter. Steps and entry walks are shoveled and gritted, since that is where the fog leaves its film. Where the banks have grown too tall to push another inch, we cut them back and give the sightlines at the road their room again. Having a place open before the first car needs to move is the measure of the job out here.
