There is a stretch of gravel road toward Kingston where the woodlots come right down to the ditch, and by mid-October the oaks have turned the whole way rust-colored. Fall is the busiest run of our year out here — leaves down in a week, then down again, every yard needing clearing before the ground goes wet under them. Summer keeps its own pace: mowing on rotation, trimming the fence lines and the mailbox post, edging where the grass has crept out over the concrete. We take away what we cut and what we rake, so nothing ends up in a pile behind the garage. A Tuscola County yard that is kept up shows from a long way off, and out here you can see a long way.
