New Buffalo is a small grid held between the lake and the highway, and in a storm every one of those streets has to be open by morning. The New Buffalo Street Department plows and treats the town's roads, pushing back the drifts that build along the open blocks and clearing intersections so a bus can make its turn without a second thought. A lake-effect band will park over the same few square miles for hours, dropping fresh snow on pavement that was bare at midnight. So routes get run, and then run once more, with salt going down on the grades and the corners where stopping matters most. When daylight finds Whittaker Street dark and wet instead of white, that is the entire point.
