Mullett Lake lies long and deep in the middle of the Inland Waterway, and the lawns along it run from the road down to the water in one green slope. Key's Land and Dock LLC mows and trims those shoreline yards through the short, bright Cheboygan County summer, when mornings come off the lake cool enough for a jacket and the afternoons do not. Everything here is measured against the water: a cut that stays even down the bank, close trimming around stairs, posts and stone, an edge that holds its line where lawn gives way to sand. May is a clearing of whatever the ice and wind piled up; October is leaves off the grass before a place is closed for the season. A yard done right on Mullett looks like it belongs to the lake rather than arguing with it.
