Mount Clemens was a bath town once — people rode in for the mineral water and the long slow afternoons, which is a fine thing for a city to have been. Tundo Maintenance Inc. keeps a different sort of vigil over it now, the midnight kind, watching a radar loop crawl in from the west and deciding when to roll. Then it is plowing, clearing steps and walkways by hand, and putting salt down ahead of the freeze rather than after it. A storm handled well leaves almost no evidence: no ridge across the apron, no ice at the mailbox, just pavement where pavement belongs. That work goes out to Mount Clemens, Clinton Township and Harrison Township all winter long.
