The Flint River slips past Montrose through low, willowy bottomland, and on a still January morning the cold settles down there in a grey layer until the sun burns it off. Newton Excavating Inc. is already out by then, running plows on the drives and lots of northwest Genesee County. Heavy wet snow one week and a dry drifting kind the next — the blade angle changes, the salt changes, the number of passes changes.
