Mikado keeps to itself out in Alcona County, a crossroads with the Huron National Forest at its back and Lake Huron a short run east. Grass here grows on sand and pine duff, which asks a different hand than downstate loam — cut high, cut clean, and let the shade do part of the work. Arrowhead Acres mows, trims and tidies the yards and camp lawns along these roads, from the year-round places to the cabins that only fill up in July. Autumn cleanup in this country is mostly needles and oak leaves, raked out of the beds and off the drive before the woods go quiet for the year. What remains is a bright, kept square of green with jack pine standing all around it.
