North of town M-35 runs along with the shoreline, and on a hard January night the wind off Green Bay lays fresh drifts across every opening in the treeline. Those are the drives that fill first, out where the nearest neighbor is a field or two away and the road stays dark a long while. Eric's Winter & Landscape Services keeps a route through Menominee and the shore country beyond it, plowing driveways and turnarounds, opening paths to doors, woodpiles and mailboxes, and coming back through when the wind refills what it filled before. Sunrise here comes up pink and low across all that white, and the best thing to see in it is a drive already open. Nobody needs to hear about the work; they just need to be able to leave.
