Two seasons run through Chappy's Lawn Service, and they meet on the same brick blocks of Michigan Avenue. In July the day starts early, ahead of the heat: mowing, trimming along fences and foundations, edging the walks, hauling off the cut. In January the same day starts earlier still and in the dark, plow down, opening driveways and lots, shoveling steps and walks, laying salt where the shade keeps ice long past noon. Marshall asks for both, and both come down to one idea, which is to get there before the town needs it and leave the ground usable.
