On a July Saturday the beach at McCarty's Cove is packed and Lakeshore Boulevard smells like cut grass the whole way up the hill. Ricky's lawn care is the reason for that second part: mowing on a steady weekly turn, trimming close to seawalls and sign posts, edging the walks so they look like they were poured yesterday. Grass this near Superior grows in cool damp air and stays green late into the fall, which is a gift and also a schedule. Cleanups at either end handle the drifted sand, the storm twigs and the maple leaves. Then it is back down to the water, which is where everyone in this town would rather be anyway.
