Marion takes real winter — snow that comes early, stays put, and gets rebuilt by every north wind crossing the open fields. Mr. Stumpgrinder covers both ends of the calendar here: plowing drives, clearing walks and salting ice through the cold months, then mowing, trimming and running the spring and fall cleanups once the ground thaws. A drive opened up before sunrise is its own kind of accomplishment, and so is a lawn cut evenly enough to read the pattern from the porch. The trick in either season is the same — go where the snow or the grass actually is, not where the going is easiest. Between the two, a property stays usable twelve months a year.
