Saturday morning in Marine City sounds like gulls, a distant freighter horn, and mowers starting up one street over. Mowtime is one of those engines — moving through town on a set rhythm, cutting, trimming, edging, then on to the next address before the dew is fully off. The lawns here grow thick in the humid stretch between June and September, and the trick is simply never letting them get out in front of you. There is real pleasure in a yard done right: uniform height, clean borders, clippings off the drive, the place looking tended from the sidewalk. That is what the route is for, address after address, all summer long.
