Out past the village the section roads run straight at the horizon, and when a January wind crosses the open Cass County fields it lays the snow down in long smooth drifts. Miller Lawns LLC is out in that weather, plowing driveways and farm lanes, clearing walks, and spreading salt on the ice that forms where a drive dips toward the road. Come April the same ground turns green almost overnight and the work becomes mowing, trimming and edging, with cleanups at both ends of the season. Two calendars, one set of roads learned by heart. Nothing quite matches the look of a lane pushed wide open at first light with the fields still blue behind it.
