Maple City sits in the middle of Leelanau's orchard country, where cherry rows climb the moraine hills and the light off Lake Michigan comes in clean and cool. In June, A.W. & Sons Services is out among those hills mowing, edging, trimming and hauling away the season's growth. Lawns on this ground roll and dip, so a straight cut means reading the slope before the first pass. The mornings are quiet enough to hear a mower two farms over. A yard finished here, trimmed to the fence line with the walks blown clear, looks like it belongs to the orchards around it.
