The red light at the end of the Manistique breakwater is the last thing the summer sun touches, and evenings out here stretch on and on. Monarch Mowing spends them finishing yards — a final pass of the mower, a trim along the fence, an edge cut where lawn meets sidewalk. When the light goes short and the lake turns the air raw, the same outfit is out before dawn plowing drives and laying down salt. This far north you learn both trades or you only work half the year. Green in July, clear in January, and the yard looks intentional in either one.
