In deep winter the Manistique River still runs black under the Siphon Bridge, steaming a little while the town above it goes white. Graphos Snowplowing works those hours — the tail end of the storm, the streets empty, headlights and a blade and nothing else moving. Drives come clear down to pavement, walkways get opened, and salt goes on the ice that forms wherever the day's melt found a low spot. By breakfast the snow sits off to the side in neat banks and the day can start on time. Nobody applauds a plowed driveway; everybody notices one that isn't.
