The Grand River makes its bend at Lyons the way it always has, sliding past the dam and under the bridge toward Muir. Joe's lawn care works the streets that step down toward that water and the farm places out on the section roads — mowing, trimming around posts and porch corners, edging the walks back to a firm border. River-bottom grass grows fast in June; two good rains and it is over the ankle, so the route keeps moving. When autumn comes the maples over the village blocks let go all at once and the work turns to leaves, raked up and carried off. A lawn squared with the street is a small thing that changes how a whole block feels.
