Winter storms here are homemade. Cold air runs out over open Lake Michigan, picks up everything it can carry, and unloads it on Mason County in long white bands that can bury a driveway between supper and sunrise. Absolute Snow works the hours nobody else wants — blade down at three in the morning, headlights full of flakes, pushing back the ridge the county plow left across the end of the drive. Walks get cleared and treated, lots get opened, and by the time the coffee is on, the pavement is dark again. That is the whole ambition: Ludington gets on with its day and never thinks about the snow at all.
