East and south of the village the pavement gives out and Lowell turns into gravel roads, hayfields and old orchard rows running toward Alto and Bowne. Lehighs Lawn Care mows out there and in town both — wide open yards that take real cutting, and small village lots that need a patient line around the flower bed. September is the best of it: dew until nine, dust behind the truck, and a lawn that holds its color deep into October. Cleanups follow, leaves hauled off before the first hard freeze locks the ground. Steady mowing, week after week, right up until the grass finally quits.
