Down along Hines Drive the Middle Rouge widens into Newburgh Lake, and at dusk the herons stand out there like fence posts that decided to move. Winter flips the tools: plowing driveways, shoveling steps and walkways, spreading salt on the slick spots that form where wind crosses open water.
