About Lucy's Lawn Care and Snow Removal Corporation

Clippers come down out of the northwest overnight, and by two in the morning Livonia's mile-road grid has gone from map to blank page. Lucy's Lawn Care and Snow Removal Corporation reads that hour as a working one: plowing driveways down to pavement, shoveling the walks and the porch steps, salting where the ice wants to set up under a boot. The grid helps — a route run in order, street after street, so nobody is left waiting on daylight. Wet Great Lakes snow is heavy stuff, and it is far easier to move at the front of a storm than after it packs into a crust. There is a plain satisfaction in a cleared drive at first light: dark asphalt, square corners, a car that pulls out without a thought.
